Historical Highlights of the Week of Prayer
In Loving Memory of
Sister Alma Jean Danford

This year, we will celebrate Senior Mission II's Sixth Annual Week of Prayer observance. In 1998, our late President, Sis. Alma Jean Danford, approved and promoted a proposal from the Mission Development Council to set aside the week before the May Board for Special Prayer. Our auxiliary was going through the challenges of reconstruction, and prayer was certainly in order. She later asked that the Week of Prayer be extended from seven to eight days, Saturday to Saturday.

Sis. Danford's church, Mt. Olive, was always among the first to respond with feedback concerning activities and benefits received from their Week of Prayer observance. In fact, a few days before she went home to glory, she made a telephone call to Dallas to be sure their feedback had been received, and to encourage the Council to keep the ministry going.

Since its inception, the goal of the Week of Prayer has remained constant, as stated in the original guide: "To stimulate interest in, and strengthen commitment to personal and corporate prayer among believers, thereby drawing us into a more intimate fellowship with God, and in step with His commission to impact the world." Following are all of the areas of focus we have used for our Week of Prayer observances:

    The Focus-Areas:
  1. Praise and Worship
  2. Individual Church Members
  3. Pastor/Church Leadership Team
  4. The True Work of the Church
  5. Family Worship
  6. District Associations/Moderators
  7. Convention Leadership
  8. Festival of Praise
    The Calvary Events:
  1. The Last Supper
  2. Gethsemane
  3. From Annas to Caiaphas
  4. Before Pontius Pilate, First Time
  5. Before Herod
  6. Before Pilate, Second Time
  7. Golgotha
  8. The Resurrection

The next several pages contain daily emphasis to help guide us through a STATEWIDE, UNIFIED Week of Prayer.

John 17:18-23

As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Daily Emphasis
Day1Saturday

The Prayer Focus: Praise and Worship

Today, our Sacred Space should be devoted to reflecting on the authenticity of our praise and worship, asking Him to teach us how to properly worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.. We want to open up our hearts and minds to receive Him and give Him our sincere adoration and praise. So worship him with a thankful heart. Count some of your blessings in His presence. Acknowledge who He is and some of what He has done.

The Calvary Event: Jesus' Desire Fulfilled
    Meditative Scripture: Luke 22:14-15

Jesus had a deep desire to eat the last supper with His disciples, and expressed it with much passion: "With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer:" If Jesus could open Himself up to his disciples like that, surely we can open ourselves up to Him in the privacy of our Sacred Space, and worship Him. When we worship the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, He gives birth to intimacy in our hearts, as we lavish all of our attention and affection toward Him. A good anointed worship time refreshes and revives us. It speaks to our spirit the truth about God and His power.

To be effective in our prayer ministry, we must be awaken in our spirit. Worship will awaken and sharpen our spirit to be in tune with the will of God. "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me." (Mat 15:8) Put your heart into your praise.

Day2Sunday

The Prayer Focus: Individual Members of Your Church

Enter your Sacred Space to pray for Individual Members of your church, including Yourself. If there is a member you have not felt kindly toward, make it right this week. Remember, your relationship with your sister impacts your relationship with God. Don't fall into the trap of treating people the way they treat you. Treat people the way Jesus treats you.

    The Calvary Event: Remembering Gethsemane
    Meditative Scripture: Matthew 26:36-50

In the Gethsemane experience, our Lord agonized over the bitter cup, made bitter by my sins, your sins, and the sins of the world. Love overruled the agony and he declared, "Not my will, but Thy will be done." Remembering His sufferings make us realize how much He cares and understands our pain and suffering, and the extent to which He was willing to go to bring us back to God. Let us be willing to go that extra mile for one another, and love the way He loves and commands, reaching out to one another with supportive kindness. "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." (Jn 13:34)

Day3Monday

The Prayer Focus: Your Pastor and His Leadership Team

Your Pastor and his Leadership Team need your prayers. Let their names fall from your lips in your Sacred Space, and hold them close to your heart. God already knows their imperfections, as he knows yours and mine. Let us pray fervently that they may wrest themselves from any entanglement that keeps them from being the leaders God wants them to be.

The Calvary Event: From Annas to Caiaphas
    Meditative Scripture: John 18:24-24

As He was being taken from Annas to Caiaphas, they had him bound like a common criminal. But that was probably not as hurtful as having a member of the inner circle of his followers, namely Peter, disown Him. Peter was no doubt afraid for his life, and therefore did not stand up in Jesus' defense or even admit to being a part of His team. Jesus was innocent, but he was still deserted by the members of his team.

You may be blessed to have an ideal Pastor and ideal Deacons, who put the church first and truly love the people. Or, you may have leadership that is less dedicated. Either way, don't desert them. Pray for God's will in their lives. Pray for God's way in the church. Pray for God's control of your thoughts and action. Don't jump ship because one of them does wrong, but pray for that person, and hold on. We have all yielded to some kind of temptation, but God is able to restore us and use us to His glory. " Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted." (Gal. 6:1)

Day4Tuesday

The Prayer Focus: The True Work of the Church

Use your Sacred Space to pray for the True Work of the Church to be elevated from a sideline activity to the focal point. Beg God to help us practice self-denial, as instructed, and stop insisting on our way. How can we effectively do God's work when our agenda is full of our work? This trend has invaded the local church and spread to the district associations, and the state and national conventions. We say it is "all about Jesus," but our agenda does not reflect this sentiment.

The Calvary Event: Jesus Standing Before Pilate- First Time
    Meditative Scripture: Luke 23:1-5

Standing before Pilate the first time, Jesus was asked by him, "Art thou the King of the Jews?" Pilate did not know and did not really care who Jesus was. He was just making conversation while he tried to figure out how he could exempt himself from having to make a decision.. We need to reexamine our conviction as to who Jesus is. Is He really the Savior of our soul, to whom we are indebted, and in whom "we live, and move and have our being?" Is He really our Lord, whom we should always serve? Is He really our King, whom we are obligated to obey? Have you made a decision as to who Jesus is to you, and what your relationship is to Him? Your decision determines whether you commit yourself to doing His work or doing "your thing." "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work". (Jn 9:4)

Day5Wednesday

    The Prayer Focus: Family Worship

Pray in your Sacred Space for more families to worship together. Families need to come to church together, and also have family worship in the home. In the traditional Covenant of the Baptist Church, we used to pledge "to maintain family and secret devotion." As we "Restore the Word as our Spiritual Foundation" in our convention, this would be an excellent time to also restore these powerful Christian teachings and examples in the home. Let's lend our collective prayers to this cause.

The Calvary Event: Jesus Before Herod
    Meditative Scripture: Luke 23:8-11

It is obvious from Herod's words and actions that he did not take Jesus seriously. He was glad to see Jesus only because he wanted Him to perform some miracle. Other than that, he had no use for Jesus. He could have immediately returned Him to Pilate, but he chose to first make fun of Him and mock, dressing Him in a "gorgeous robe," and then sending Him back to Pilate.

Working with the youth in our church has given me cause to pause, and wonder about the role Jesus plays in the training they receive from their parents or guardians, or whether there is any Christian training at all in some of the homes. Too many of them seem to have no more knowledge about, or use for Jesus than Herod had. How can our children do better if they don't know better? Pray mightily for the restoration of Christian teaching in the home. "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." (Deu 6:6-7)

Day6Thursday

The Prayer Focus: District Associations and Moderators

The support and cooperation of district associations and moderators are essential for the evolvement of our convention into a state of wholeness, that oneness for which Jesus prayed, as recorded in the 17th chapter of John, "that they may be one, even as we are one." So we want to kneel down in our sacred space and petition God on their behalf. Pray for their dedication and humility - dedication to persevere "in spite of . . ." and humility to forego their own wishes for the good of the whole. Ask God to give them the vision and the passion to rally around the common goal expressed in our Theme: "Restoring the Word As Our Spiritual Foundation."

The Calvary Event: Jesus Before Pilate, Second Time
    Meditative Scripture: Matthew 27:11-31

God needs strong leaders, and our convention needs strong moderators, the kind that will not buckle under the pressure of riotous people, whether laity or clergy. :In today's meditative scripture, Pilate had to deal with both. Not only were the people demanding him to do the wrong thing, but the church leaders were using their influence to persuade the people to do wrong. Pilate found himself in a very small minority. Both he and his wife knew he should have freed Jesus, but Pilate yielded to the will of the people, when he knew their will was evil. Trying to "satisfy the people" has caused many leaders to consciously make the wrong choice. Pray that our leaders will make wise decisions that are God-based. "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Matthew 10:28 "Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest" .Joshua 1:7

Day7Friday

Victory in Jesus

I heard an old, old story
How a Saviour came from glory
How He gave His life on Calvary-
To save someone like me
I heard about His groaning
Of His precious blood's atoning
Then I repented of my sin-
And won the victory

Oh, victory in Jesus
My Saviour forever
He sought me and He bought me-
With His redeeming blood
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is Him
He plunged me to victory- beneath the cleansing flood

Day 8

"He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay."
(Mat 28:6)

Celebrating the Power of His Resurrection in Our Lives"

"Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee. O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee."
--Psalms 67:3-5

Each year the Week of Prayer culminates with a Festival of Praise. You may decide to schedule your Festival of praise with another activity or program, or make it a separate event. Also, you may want to hold it on a different date than is indicated in this prayer journal. Whatever date is best for your group to hold the Festival of Praise will be just fine. However, the preceding days of prayer should remain the same statewide, so we are sending up a concert of prayers, "touching and agreeing" on the same issues.

During this culminating event, any way the Lord leads you to praise Him and edify the people will be in order. It should be a service of HIGH PRAISE with lips, hands, feet, instruments, all coming from hearts of joy and thanksgiving. You may want to include such activities as Singing, Praise, Prayer, Testimonies, Bible Lessons/Lectures, Expressions of God's Presence during the Week of Prayer, Rededication, a Sermon,.etc. Remember the Week of Prayer Outreach Activity

Each year, as an expression of our love, we ask you to reach out to some person or group in a way that will do them good. Following are some ideas, but don't feel limited by them. Be guided by the Holy Spirit and the resources, time and energy of your group.

SOME IDEAS TO GET YOU THINKING

  • Witness to someone who doesn't know Christ
  • Provide food for a person or group that is hungry
  • Minister to a family/families impacted by American's war preparation
  • Provide financial support for a needy person/family
  • Give clothes to a needy family/group
  • Do something special for senior citizens
  • Visit somebody who is lonely or sick.
  • Visit someone who is incarcerated
  • Get caught in the act of doing something special to encourage your pastor and his family
  • Send something to a missionary in a foreign country
  • Mail letters to servicemen and servicewomen overseas

Prayer Options

When we pray, it is not the position of our body, but of the condition of our heart that matters. Following is a list to get you thinking about different ways to pray.

Intercession: If no non-believers are present in the meeting, along with the invitation-to-discipleship, pray a prayer of intercession for the lost.

Hot Seat: A chair is placed in the center of the room and anyone with a need can sit in it. Others gather around, lay hands on them and pray.

Twos or Threes: Dividing the group into smaller groups of two's or three's will almost always help facilitate deeper sharing and more efficient use of the prayer time.

Prayer Circle: Standing with hands joined gives a unifying effect to the prayer time.

Sentence Prayer: Members of the group raise up prayer in random pattern one sentence at a time. (These should be single sentences, not paragraphs.) This enables even the most inexperienced and the most long-winded to pray on common ground.

Agreement Prayer: Probably the most common form of prayer in Western churches today follows the pattern of Matthew 18:19 where people lead out in prayer one at a time while the others listen and "agree" with their prayer. Expressing that agreement vocally (i.e. amen, yes, etc...) is an encouragement to the one praying.

Concert Prayer: All in the group raise their voices to the Lord in prayer in spontaneous concurrence, each praying in his/her own way. Wait until the last person finishes praying before moving to next phase.

Meditation: Before prayer, a minute or two of silent meditation can help focus minds and hearts. This is best used in conjunction with Scripture. Have group silently read and meditate on a specific Scripture.

Focused Prayer: Take an extended period of time and pray about one particular need. This is particularly helpful in breaking down strongholds.

Visual Prayer: Place a chair in the middle of the room and introduce the prayer time by asking, "If Jesus were sitting in this chair, and you could ask him any question about your life, what would it be?"

Journaling: Group members write down prayers on paper, for their on eyes only. Even in a group setting, this is helpful for complicated, contentious, or confidential prayer needs

Putting it to Work

Keep this guide and use it when you plan your meetings. Share it with those who are delegated the tasks of leading this section of the meeting.

I Asked God

I asked God to take away my pride, And God said, "No."
He said it was not for Him to take away, But for me to give up.
I asked God to make my handicapped child whole, And God said, "No."
He said her spirit is whole, While her body is only temporary.
I asked God to grant me patience, And God said, "No."
He said patience is a by-product of tribulation. It isn't granted, it is earned.
I asked God to give me happiness, And God said, "No."
He said He gives blessings, Happiness is up to me.
I asked God to spare me pain, And God said, "No."
He said, "Suffering draws you apart from Worldly cares and brings you closer to Me."
I asked God to make my spirit grow, And God said, "No."
He said I must grow on my own, But He will prune me to make it fruitful.
I asked God if He loved me, and God said, "Yes." He gave me His only Son,
who died for me. And I will be in Heaven someday Because....I believe.
I asked God to help me love others As much as He loves me,
And God said, "Ah finally, you have the idea."

"Prayers Can't Be Answered Unless They are Prayed"

Life without purpose is barren indeed - There can't be a harvest unless you plant seed
There can't be attainment unless there's a goal - And man's but a robot unless there's a soul.
If we send no ships out, no ships will come in - And unless there's a contest, nobody can win.
For games can't be won unless they are played - And prayers can't be answered unless they are prayed.
So whatever is wrong with your life today - You'll find a solution if you kneel down and pray.
Not just for pleasure, enjoyment and health - Not just for honors and prestige and wealth.
But pray for a purpose to make life worth living - And pray for the joy of unselfish giving.
For great is your gladness and rich your reward
When you make your life's purpose the choice of the Lord.
